Abstract
The Pohnpei State Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan 2026–2030 establishes the framework for conserving and sustainably managing biodiversity in Pohnpei State, Federated States of Micronesia. The Plan recognizes the ecological, cultural and economic importance of Pohnpei’s marine, coastal, freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems, which support livelihoods, food security and climate resilience. It identifies major threats to biodiversity, including habitat degradation, overexploitation of natural resources, invasive alien species, pollution, unsustainable land use and climate change.
The Strategy sets out eight objectives focused on biodiversity planning, protected area management, watershed and mangrove conservation, invasive species control, waste and pollution management, traditional knowledge preservation, conservation financing and institutional capacity-building.It promotes the expansion and effective management of marine and terrestrial protected areas through the Protected Areas Network and community-based resource management. The Plan emphasizes the conservation of watershed forests, mangroves, coral reefs and other critical habitats, while strengthening enforcement of environmental regulations and sustainable fisheries management. It supports the integration of traditional ecological knowledge into biodiversity conservation and encourages community participation, awareness raising and environmental education. The Strategy also seeks to improve biodiversity monitoring, research, ecosystem restoration, biosecurity measures and climate adaptation actions.
