Abstract
The Forest Stewardship Strategy for the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) is a comprehensive plan focused on sustainable forest management across the FSM’s national government and its states—Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae. The document outlines a framework for coordination among various government agencies, indigenous tribes, and federal land management entities. Key components include the establishment of committees such as the State Forest Stewardship Coordinating Committee and the State Urban Forestry Council, which are tasked with addressing issues like food security, biodiversity conservation, watershed protection, and coastal stabilization. The strategy also highlights the importance of integrating existing plans, such as Wildlife Action Plans and Community Wildfire Protection Plans, to ensure that efforts are aligned with broader environmental and community goals.
Each state’s section of the strategy provides a detailed assessment of local forest resources, including food security, biodiversity, watersheds, and urban forestry, while also addressing the capacity-building needs for effective forest management. The resource strategy for each state outlines long-term desired conditions, general and specific strategies, and the resources required to implement these strategies. Additionally, the Forest Legacy Program is emphasized as a crucial tool for conserving threatened forest lands, particularly through public involvement and the protection of areas with significant ecological, cultural, and social value. The document also underscores the need for ongoing monitoring and program integration to ensure the long-term sustainability of forest resources in the FSM.
