Abstract
The Clean Growth Strategy - Leading the way to a low carbon future is a national multi-sectoral policy document. This document sets out the actions to put clean growth at the centre of the UK's modern Industrial Strategy. It identified areas where needs to make the greatest progress, both through technological breakthroughs and large-scale deployment. Key are recommended to drive emissions down throughout the next decade, with the focus to achieve the fifth carbon budget through domestic action in the UK. The policies and proposals in the Strategy contain the following areas: Accelerating Clean Growth by developing world leading Green finance capaiciency; Improving Business and Industry Efficiency; Improving the energy efficiency of homes; Accelerating the Shift to Low Carbon Transport; Delivering Clean, Smart, Flexible Power; Enhancing the Benefits and Value of Natural Resources; Leading in the Public Sector for the energy efficiency improvements and Government Leadership in Driving Clean Growth.Annex B sets out actions and milestones that the Government is committing to in this plan.
The document contributes to addressesing food waste issues. The actions and milestones contain: Targets of a 20% reduction in food and drink waste arising in the UK, a 20% reduction in the greenhouse gas intensity of food and drink consumed in the UK, and a reduction in impact associated with water use in the supply chain through delivery of the Courtauld Commitment 2025.Work towards no food waste entering landfill by 2030.
The document seeks to make agriculture make agriculture, forestry more productive and sustainable. The relevant actions and milestones include:Set up a stronger and more attractive domestic carbon offset market that will encourage more businesses to support cost-effective emissions reductions such as through planting trees; Establish forestry investment zones; Commit to make available up to £200 million to support rural communities over the next two years and set out agroforestry decisions; Allocated funding to woodland planting; at least 50% of household waste being recycled by 2020; To fund larger-scale woodland and forest creation; etc.
The Document further indicate the key changes in each sector that could lead to the emissions reductions set out in UK's 2032 pathway. The overall target of emissions per capita of all sectors will be 4 tCO2e/person by 2032. Total UK conventional woodland area will reach 3,648 . Emissions intensity per £m agricultural output (tCO2e/£ million will be 2,817 by 2032; Biodegradable waste sent to landfill will be reduced to 4 million tonnes by 2032.
