Abstract
The Food Waste Reduction Action Plan’s target is to reduce food waste by one third by 2025. Four areas, strongly interconnected, and their associated measures are identified by the plan and defined as vital for the achievement of the Plan’s target. The plan is also designed to engage with every part of Scottish food supply chain and waste hierarchy by engaging with the producers, suppliers and consumers of food.
The Scottish Government through the Plan commits to: 1) Improved monitoring and infrastructure: to reduce waste effectively, there is a need to improve monitoring, measurement and reporting of food waste across all sectors. 2) Sector leadership: Everyone in Scotland is expected to play part in tackling food waste and reaching the Plan target. The Plan commits the Government in supporting leadership, innovation, effectiveness and efficiency in Scotland’s public, private and hospitality sectors by building skills, competency and knowledge on the management of food waste; sharing expertise and best practice; promoting reporting on food waste; among others. 3) Public engagement and communications is crucial to raise people’s awareness and understanding of the food waste problem and engage them in activities that address the problem. 4) Supporting delivery of a new approach to food waste through a Food Waste Hub. The Hub will connect businesses seeking to reduce food waste with the funding, support and innovations, it will also help in identifying new skills, promote research and innovation in emerging bio-technologies and other solutions that will tackle food waste. .
