Abstract
These Regulations implement Directive (EC) No 2009/41, which lays down measures for the contained use of genetically modified micro-organisms with a view to protecting human health and the environment. Contained use includes any activity or other action (for example storage) involving a genetically modified organism within a controlled environment where there are physical barriers and/or other controls in place to ensure that any genetically modified organism is not released into the environment. Before contained use involving micro-organisms, the person responsible for the contained use must ensure that an assessment of the risks to human health and the environment has been carried out and classify the contained use. The Regulations also provide for notification of contained use, the requirement to apply the containment measures which are appropriate to that contained use in accordance with the risk assessment, appeals and registration of notifications.
