Abstract
These Regulations concern control of the application of nitrogen fertilizer in nitrate sensitive areas. They continue to implement in England Council Directive 91/676/EEC concerning the protection of waters against pollution by nitrates from agricultural sources by: (a) designating nitrate vulnerable zones and establishing an appeals procedure against the designation; (b) imposing annual limits on the amount of nitrogen from organic manure that may be used in a nitrate vulnerable zone; (c) requiring an occupier to plan in advance how much nitrogen fertilizer will be spread and to provide a risk map of the holding where the nitrogen fertilizer will be used; (d) establishing periods during which it is prohibited to spread nitrogen fertilizer; and (e) regulating how nitrogen fertilizer must be stored.
