Abstract
Our Animal Welfare Plan for Wales 2021-26 aim is strategically aligned to the Wales Animal Health and Welfare Framework (Wales AHWF) 2014-24 which seeks to maintain and improve standards of animal health and welfare for kept animals, protect public health, and contribute to the economy and the environment.
The components of the Plan are presented in three categories: 1) Programme for Government commitments; 2) Ongoing, Wales-based policy work; 3) UK/GB policy collaborations. 1) Programme for Government contains four animal welfare commitments: develop a national model for regulation of animal welfare, introducing registration for animal welfare establishments, commercial breeders for pets or for shooting, and animal exhibits; Improve the qualifications for animal welfare inspectors to raise their professional status; Require CCTV in all slaughterhouses; Restrict the use of cages for Farmed Animals. 2) Ongoing, Wales-based policy work; actions include work toward improving: licensing system, breeding, enforcement by local authorities, marking/identification, 3) In the field of UK/GB policy collaborations include introducing additional safeguards for animals through the Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill; and actions toward welfare in transport.
