Abstract
Scotland's Forestry Strategy 2019–2029 provides an overview of contemporary Scottish forestry, presents 50-year vision for Scotland’s forests and woodlands, and sets out a 10-year framework for action.
Strategy's vision is "In 2070, Scotland will have more forests and woodlands, sustainably managed and better integrated with other land uses. These will provide a more resilient, adaptable resource, with greater natural capital value, that supports a strong economy, a thriving environment, and healthy and flourishing communities". Strategy Objectives are: 1) Increase the contribution of forests and woodlands to Scotland’s sustainable and inclusive economic growth. 2) Improve the resilience of Scotland’s forests and woodlands and increase their contribution to a healthy and high quality environment. 3) Increase the use of Scotland’s forest and woodland resources to enable more people to improve their health, well-being and life chances .
The whole Strategy is focused on making forestry more productive and sustainable; several principles and measures are envisaged in each section. Strategy's priorities are: Ensuring forests and woodlands are sustainably managed; Expanding the area of forests and woodlands, recognizing wider land-use objectives; Improving efficiency and productivity, and developing markets; Increasing the adaptability and resilience of forests and woodlands; Enhancing the environmental benefits provided by forests and woodlands; Engaging more people, communities and businesses in the creation, management and use of forests and woodlands.
To increase the resilience of livelihoods to disasters, main actions are directed to promote tree growth to providing natural flood management and shelter for livestock, by improving the understanding of the threats to Scotland’s forests and woodlands and potential mitigating actions, through education, research, surveillance and the development of new technologies, by managing for, and mitigating against, the threats posed by tree pests and diseases through biosecurity measures and contingency planning., by supporting forest design and silvicultural actions which increase the capacity of forests and woodlands to adapt to, and thrive in, a changing climate, among others.
