Abstract
The goal of the National Strategy is to promote the rational use of antibiotics, to monitor antimicrobial resistance and to strengthen the prevention and control of infections in medical institutions. The Strategy takes into account the recommendations of the World Health Organization, the European Center for Disease Control, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as the international scientific literature and current data on antimicrobial resistance in Georgia.
A strategy to be developed for the veterinary sector should consider (but should not be limited to) the following key aspects: (a) limiting the use of antibiotics in veterinary medicine (banning the use of some of them, banning their use as growth stimulants and allowing their use only for therapeutic purposes); (b) starting monitoring of antibiotics used in veterinary medicine (including control of antibiotic residues in primary products of animal origin); (c) raising awareness of AMR among veterinarians and farmers, taking into account the use of safe animal feed principles; and (d) strengthening/expansion of food bacterial contamination monitoring (including laboratory capabilities).
The development of antimicrobial resistance is a complex process and is influenced by many factors. The increase in resistance rates in Georgia and other countries of the region requires urgent action. Implementing a coordinated national strategy can significantly reduce antibiotic use and antimicrobial resistance rates.
"Good practice" infection control and prevention implemented in medical institutions will significantly reduce the risk of nosocomial infections and the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance. Only the mandatory implementation of infection control and prevention in all clinics across the country will have a significant result, because, as international experience shows, the successful implementation of infection control and prevention in individual clinics has only a local and short-term effect.
