Abstract
The National Program on Animal Health of Georgia 2016-2020 and Animal Health Action Plan are national sectoral strategic documents of Georgia. The Program’s main objective is to improve animal health and the veterinary sector in general.
The Program aims to make agriculture, forestry and fisheries more productive and sustainable. To this end, it is planning to include environmental impact assessments in veterinary control planning; and to implement modern methods of destroying biological waste, including carcasses.
To enable more inclusive and efficient agricultural and food systems, the Program aims for private veterinarians with the adequate incentives, contracts, and education; veterinary services providers that are knowledgeable, qualified and competent; effective infrastructure (e.g.: equipment, IT and legislation) which can be used by the National Food Agency and the laboratory of the Ministry of Agriculture in farms, laboratories, slaughterhouses and administrative offices; identification and registration of animals and farms, movement of living organisms and traceability of products; effective accounting of diseases, capacity building by raising awareness among stakeholders and the public about response to disease breakouts; long-term plans to prevent, eliminate or control certain diseases, as well as supervisions strategies and the overlooked plans of disease control.
In order to increase the resilience of livelihoods to disasters, the Program aims to improve the epidemic surveillance and control in the veterinary sector; and to ensure epidemiological safety and prevention.
