Abstract
The National Strategy on Animal Welfare (2014-2016) is a national sectoral strategy of Georgia. Its main objective is to define the state-level approach towards domestic animals (farm animals, pets, and partner animals). The state’s animal welfare measures represent a segment of the wider sustainable development policy of the country. More specific objectives of this Strategy include: to establish a standard of the living environment of animals; to take into account the global animal welfare standards in animal safety, and in ensuring their livings environment and vital functions; to conserve biodiversity, to ensure public participation and interests in animal population control issues; to strike a reasonable balance between the rights of humans, and life and health rights of animals; to adopt the Animal Welfare Act which covers farm, wild and pet animals; to adopt a law on responsible ownership of pet and farm animals; to designate under law the responsible agency for pet animals; to control animal populations and create an agency for this purpose; and to raise the public awareness about these issues.
