Abstract
The Regional Development Strategy of Adjara is a regional cross-sectoral strategy of Georgia’s Adjara region. Its main priorities are strengthening economic security of Adjara; developing Adjara as the tourism destination of the highest class; and developing the metropolitan zones of Adjara (Batumi and Kobuleti).
Among others, the Strategy provides for developing renewable energy; improving the education system; supporting the small and medium-size businesses, including by making affordable credit available; creating the innovation center of the region; modernizing the traditional sectors of the economy; to improve the attractiveness of the region for investments; supporting the least developed areas, and improving the rural life; strengthening the local government; improving the qualitative state of the environment, raising awareness of the public about environmental protection, and a rational use of natural resources; diversifying tourism infrastructure; protecting the environment, the coast and rehabilitating the cultural monuments; developing eco-tourism and agro-tourism; developing health tourism and the infrastructure for thermal and mineral water resorts; providing shelter for the socially vulnerable persons; improving the social protection system; improving the quality of potable and surface waters; improving the quality of ambient air; monitoring of groundwater; monitoring of erosion; ecological monitoring of mines; to improve the system of waste and chemical substance management; protecting the biodiversity of forests, and fully inventorying the forests; ensuring the fuelwood for local population; supporting hunting and aquaculture; protecting the Black Sea from pollution; protecting the biodiversity, and general environmental protection; and supporting youth initiatives.
In the field of agriculture, it provides for the effective use of agricultural land; increasing the intensity of agricultural production; increasing the agricultural education; improving the infrastructure for agricultural production; supporting the agricultural business; ensuring the food safety and quality; and improving the veterinary and plant protection.
