Abstract
The Roadmap for Environmental Protection and Climate-related Action in the Process of EU Approximation is a national sectoral roadmap of Georgia. Its main objective is to support the implementation of the EU-Georgia Association Agreement and the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Areas (DCFTA). The document creates nine roadmaps, including in environmental governance; air quality protection; water quality and water resources management (includes the maritime area, but not potable water); waste management; environmental protection (includes GMOs, as well as trade in species and fisheries policies); industrial pollution and industrial hazards; management of chemicals; climate-related activities (includes the ozone-depleting substances); and forestry.
Among others, the specific activities of these roadmaps include developing new legislation about strategic environmental impact assessment; creating and expanding the Environmental Information Management System (EIMS); developing a bill about environmental liability; developing a minister’s order about proactive publishing of environmental information; developing a bill about air quality standards; a gradual restriction of petrol quality standards; developing air quality assessment principles; adopting ecological classes of cars; reducing emissions in order to achieve the national emissions limits; completing the bill about water resources; developing a regulation about integrated management of river basins; developing a regulation about identification of water objects; developing a regulation about effluent waters; developing a program about monitoring water quality (including nitrates); developing a regulation about flood risks; developing a strategy for an integrated coastal management; developing a diversified management plan for protected areas; finalizing the law on biodiversity; developing criteria and indicators for a sustainable management of forestry; developing a national program of fuelwood use; and monitoring of forestry using modern technologies.
