Abstract
The Strategy and Action Plan for the Development of the System of Protected Areas of Georgia is a national sectoral strategy. Its main vision is, by 2030, the system of the protected areas of Georgia is planned and managed according to the international standards and is a unified network of protected areas of a variety of status connected with ecological corridors, which are in harmony with the local communities and is effectively providing long-term natural and cultural services important for the human life. Among others, the Strategy also provides for forming an effective network of protected areas; improving the management of the system and its specific areas; long term conservation of biodiversity – protection of species and habitats and restoration as needed; sustainable management of natural resources in order to protect the local agricultural activities and to provide the livelihood services to the local communities; creating the recreational potential of protected areas and sustainable development of tourism; supporting the conservation of the historical and cultural value of the protected areas; and strengthening the support from the public and a variety of agencies.
