Biosafety Act, 2011 (No. 831).

This Act provides rules relative to the transfer, handling and use of genetically modified organisms resulting from biotechnology for purposes of protection public health and the environment. It establishes the National Biosafety Authority and defines its functions and powers. It also establishes an Appeals Tribunal and provides with respect to inspections.
The Authority shall decide on applications for contained or confined use of GMO's, for introduction of GMO's into the environment, or on applications for the importation, placing on the market or export of GMO's. The Authority shall keep a register of relevant documents. Risk assessment shall be carried out by the Board of the Authority on the advice of a Technical Committee and in accordance with Schedule 4. Regulatory agencies shall control activities of applicants in accordance with Schedule 5.
