Abstract
This Co-Management Agreement for the Sole fishery is based on sections 11, 14 and 15 of the Fisheries Act of 2007, which provide the authority for the Minister of Fisheries, Water Resources and National Assembly Matters to designate special management areas for the purpose of community-based co-management, to allocate fishing rights and to establish Community Fisheries Centres (CFCs) for the purposes of community-based fisheries management. Thus, the Minister of Fisheries declares a special management area for sole fisheries from the Atlantic shoreline and shorelines adjacent to the estuarine areas of The Gambia River out to 9 nautical miles, and assigns exclusive fishing rights and responsibility for sustainable management and conservation of the sole fishery to National Sole Fishery Co-Management Committee (NASCOM) and associated Landing sites Co-Management Committees (LACOMs) though local Community Fishing Centres.
