Abstract
This Act, consisting of twenty sections and divided into four parts, applies to the importation, distribution and major retailing of any essential commodity within The Gambia, including: foodstuff as rice, sugar, flour, edible oil, milk, tomato paste, onions, potatoes, chicken and chicken parts, non-food and any other class of commodity declared by the Minister. The Act concerns: functions of the Directorate of Trade and of the Gambia Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, including: development of terms and conditions for issuing licences, designation of authorised officers, monitoring the compliance of the licensees with terms and conditions. Further matters covered by the Act include: conditions for trading essential commodities; compliance with the Gambian legislation on the matter; procedural matters; offences and penalties.
