Abstract
This Act, consisting of 36 articles, provides for protecting consumers from unfair and misleading market conduct, and therefore applies to: citizens, body corporates carrying on business in the country. Part II of the Act concerns consumer welfare and particularly: consumer rights to safe and good quality of services and products; supplier obligations to consumers; warranties and conditions of sale, including labelling and packaging of food products; standard form agreements; contracts with clear and understandable terms; unfair trade practices; advertising regulations; remedies for harmful commodities. Part III concerns functions and powers of the Consumer Protection Commission, including appointment of officers, conduction of investigations into consumer complaints, formulation of Policy and legislative proposals, conduct research on consumer protection issues, providing information on any dangerous goods and services. Part IV provides for the establishment, functions and powers of the consumer protection tribunal. Part V concerns financial penalties, civil and criminal liability, remedies for consumers. Part VI concerns disclosure of information; offences in case of supplying false information.
