Abstract
This Livestock Master Plan moves from the consideration that livestock sector plays a key role in creating livelihood opportunities and income generation for poverty reduction among rural inhabitants in The Gambia. Nevertheless, the livestock sector is faced with some challenges, such as lack of access to feed, fodder and water; disease outbreaks; limited veterinary services, therefore this Master Plan provides for increasing support for the sector, by attracting targeted investment from institutions, development partners and the private sector. Focusing on three key livestock value chains; cattle, small ruminants (sheep and goats) and poultry, the Master Plan covers the main interventions to improve the livestock sector and the projected impact of these interventions, throughout the period 2023-2027. Concerning key interventions and their impacts, the Master Plan focuses on: disease control and routine mass vaccination programmes; government subsidies for establishing private breeding farms; training farmers on the utilisation of locally available feed products for chicken feeding; gender and social inclusion implications for livestock value chain development.
