Abstract
This National Export Strategy (NES), covering the period 2021-2025, is a comprehensive and targeted roadmap, which attempts to diversify exports, strengthen expanding sectors and contribute to the achievement of the objectives of the National Development Plan and the Sustainable Development Goals, helping Gambian business activities to enter global value chains and facilitating export growth and diversification of the country’s economy. The vision of the Strategy aims at achieving an efficient and globally-competitive export sector that is innovative, inclusive, resilient and responsible, in order to fully utilise The Gambia’s human and natural resources to drive export growth. The Strategy identifies the river Gambia as on of the key natural resources as a core strategic element of export development, and one of the country’s greatest assets. In fact, the river may be used for transportation, trade, tourism, agriculture and fisheries. The Strategy focuses its development on the following six priority sectors, further strengthened with cross-cutting strategies in broader areas: 1) tourism; 2) horticulture and agribusiness; 3) fisheries; 4) groundnuts; 5) cashew; 6) light manufacturing.
For each priority sector, the Strategy defines goals, objectives, actions and targeted measures for its implementation. Particularly, the Strategy concerns: women and youth impact and involvement in trade issues; global trends, such as: outbreak of communicable diseases, growing environmental consciousness, global warming and climate change, protection of health, rising wages; opportunities and implications of fisheries sector; development of aquaculture; linkages between fisheries and tourism; development of oyster cultivation; strengths and weakness of artisanal and industrial fisheries; fisheries and trade partnership; global groundnut sector and comparison with the groundnut sector in The Gambia; limited mechanisation and limited use of technology in the groundnut sector; performances of cashew exports from The Gambia; horticulture and export performance; fair-trade movement; organic food production; nutritional aspects; fresh food and opportunity for farmers.
