Abstract
This National Policy provides for an acceptable, affordable and sustainable sanitation and hygiene service to all communities in the Gambia, through inter-agency collaboration and community participation, in order to improve the quality of life of the population, and to comply with sustainable development targets. The Policy aims at achieving the following goals: increasing public awareness about the importance of better sanitation and hygiene practices for improved health; improving public access to safe water supply and hand washing facilities; improving education towards a wiser use of water; establishing agencies and coordination structures for sanitation and hygiene; reducing burning of waste; improving the number of premises, and dwellings in urban areas with adequate drainage facilities; developing guidelines and standards for the promotion of sustainable hygiene practices; establishing sewage treatment plants in urban and peri-urban areas; combination of rainwater disposal with sewage disposal; prohibition of indiscriminate dumping of solid waste and disposal of raw sewage into natural water bodies; proper disposal of hazardous and clinical waste according to the legislation; development of measures for personal and household hygiene, with provision of safe food and drinking water; reducing the environmental impact and negative effects from pollution and unmanaged human waste disposal on human health; strengthening public-private partnership in the provision of sanitation services.
