Abstract
This Gambia’s Long-Term Climate-Neutral Development Strategy 2050 represents the country’s ambition to combat climate change effects threatening the effective enjoyment of a range of human rights including right to life, water and sanitation, food, health, and the sustainable development. Therefore, The Gambia develops an ambitious Plan, in order to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, in line with the country’s commitment to the 2016 Paris Agreement. This Strategy is structured as follows: 1) introduction and country profile, with a focus on greenhouse gas emissions, and the purpose of the Long-Term Climate-Neutral Development Strategy. 2) Framework on climate change mitigation and adaptation in the country, as a dynamic process. 3) Pathways to 2050: results of the emissions modelling analysis, including: business as usual scenario; mitigation actions to achieve a net-zero scenario. 4) Climate change resilience and adaptation. 5) Strategic priorities, targets and measures, including: decarbonisation to achieve carbon neutrality in the following sectors: energy, agriculture, land use and forestry, transport, waste management; sector-specific measures and cost of actions and interventions, including: financing investment roadmap for implementing the Strategy, awareness raising, education, research and development, communication and information, other socio-economic impacts. 6) Institutional framework for the implementation of the Strategy. 7) Conclusions.
Concerning the strategic priorities in the various sectors, the Strategy focuses on: food security, protection of forestry and natural resources, including water, biodiversity and wildlife; low emissions and resilient economy; climate resilient people and human health development, education and social protection measures; integrated coastal zone management in a changing environment; improvement of renewable energy sources, including biomass, for electricity generation; strengthening of environmentally friendly agricultural production and sustainable land conversion processes, involving agro-ecological farming, rice production intensification, controlled timber harvesting, genetic improvement of livestock species, nitrogen-reduced animal feed, afforestation and reforestation, mangrove rehabilitation, control of forest fires, reducing the use of fertilisers for crop production; mitigation actions in the waste sector including: waste separation and collection, biogas from organic waste, waste recycling, organic waste recovery.
