Abstract
This National Fertilizer Policy represents the commitment of the government of The Gambia to increase agricultural development and fight poverty among Gambian farmers by providing them with fertilizers, in order to improve soil fertility and to increase crop yields. In its vision and mission the Policy provides for ensuring a sustainable and competitive fertilizer sub-sector that contributes to national development. The Policy is inspired by several guiding principles, including: ownership, equity, risk management and gender responsiveness. The Policy defines and divides fertilizers into three categories: inorganic, organic and bio-fertilizers, and concerns: import and exports, trading and marketing of fertilizers; funding plan for implementing its content; promotion of an integrated nutrient management and conservation agriculture for environmental sustainability; establishment of incentives, to permit increased access and use of fertilizers at affordable rates by all the farmers; production of organic fertilizers to ensure environmental protection; guidelines for proper solid waste disposal; raise awareness about the use of fertilizers, in order to prevent pollution of air, water and soil degradation.
