Abstract
This Act, consisting of thirty-seven sections and divided into six parts, provides for establishing a Commission for the promotion and protection of human rights in the country, in compliance with the Constitutional provisions and the international treaties on human rights protection. The Act concerns: composition of the Commission and appointment of its members; functions and powers of the Commission, including: promoting and protecting human rights in The Gambia; monitoring, receiving, investigating and considering complaints of human rights violations; promoting awareness of human rights through: education programmes, formulation of appropriate Policies in cooperation with the government and non-governmental organisation, publication of guidelines and manuals; cooperation with public interest bodies, youth advocacy groups and other entities engaged in the protection of human rights, the protection of vulnerable groups.
The Act also concerns the establishment of thematic committees, including: a committee on the human rights of women, a committee on the human rights of children, a committee on the human rights of people with disabilities and a committee on the human rights of refugees, internally displaced persons and migrants. Further matters covered by this Act include: right of access to information and government offices; government's obligation to respond to remedial actions; duty of impartiality of the Commission; administrative provisions and procedural matters; financial provisions and establishment of a special fund for the commission works.
