Ministerial Decree No. 88740/1883 establishing measures and terms for the deliberate release into the environment of genetically modified organisms.

The Decree aims at implementing the provisions of Law No. 1650/86 “on the protection for the environment”, more specifically articles 8, 10, 12, 15 and 20. It also aims at harmonizing the Greek legislative frame with the provisions of Council Directive 2001/18/EC so as ensure that all appropriate measures are taken in order to avoid adverse effects on human health and the environment, which might arise from the deliberate release into the environment of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and their placing on the market as or in products. The Decree is composed as follows: objectives (art. 1); definitions (genetically modified organism, environmental risk assessment, etc. (art. 2); field of application - exemptions (art. 3); competent authority (art. 4); general obligations of persons (art. 5); authorisation procedure for deliberate release of GMOs (art. 6); exchange of information (art. 7); placing on the market of products containing GMOs (art. 8); conditions of consent (art. 9); measures and procedures of consent for disposal of GMOs (art. 10); observation of terms of consent (art. 11); conditions of restriction of disposal (art. 12); reports to the Commission (art. 13); controls (art. 14); confidentiality of information (art. 15); sanctions (art. 16). Four Annexes included in the text constitute integral part of this Decree.
