Abstract
This Forestry Development Strategy - National Forestry Strategy, (NAP) specifies principles and guidelines of the policy on forestry for the period 2018-2038, identifying its specific objectives, the necessary resources and means for its implementation. Within the NAP, a model of Mediterranean forestry is adopted in the country, with the vision aiming at increasing the contribution of forestry ecosystems to the country's economy through sustainability, multifunctionality, adaptability and strengthening the socio-economic role, in the light of climate change.
The Mediterranean Forestry aims at performing the following activities: 1. Adoption of the Mediterranean Forestry Model in Greece's management of forest ecosystems, adapted to the National living and abiotic conditions, with implementation at all levels, through technical and economic planning that will ensure increased flexibility and will strengthen the multifunctional role of forestry ecosystems. 2. The main features of the Mediterranean Forestry model are: its differentiation in design tools and instruments among the various forestry ecosystems, depending on the bioclimatic zones; its adaptation to the peculiarities of the Greek forestry ecosystems and to the scale of the Mediterranean landscape, respecting the local knowledge in its management, thus preserving the mosaic and the variety of land uses; its co-operation with local communities, capable of adopting traditional and innovative good practices based on interdisciplinarity and facilitating scientific cooperation and research; contribute to local growth and employment, contributing significantly to GDP; recognize the role of non-public forestry ecosystems in achieving the goals of the Strategy; recognizing the role of grazing livestock and wild animals as a means of managing the appropriate forestry ecosystems; preserve their unique worldwide biodiversity in terms of genetic resources, species, ecosystems and landscapes of EU biodiversity and creating new prospects for their exploitation in partnership with local communities; recognizing the role of hunting as an environmental management tool; protect all kinds of wetlands; protect forestry ecosystems from illegal activities as well as by biologists (diseases, insects etc.) and abiotic factors (fires, climate change etc.) mainly through preventive management, suppression and rehabilitation.
