Abstract
The Criminal Code of Guinea Bissau provides a legal framework that contributes indirectly to food security by safeguarding public welfare and economic stability. Through the criminalization of offences such as fraud, theft, corruption, and harmful practices affecting public health, the Code helps protect systems related to food production, distribution, and consumption. The regulation of crimes that undermine economic activity, public health, and resource management supports the availability and safety of food, reinforcing broader societal well-being. In addition, the Code addresses key aspects related to gender and environmental protection within its broader objective of protecting individuals and social interests. It includes provisions that protect vulnerable groups, such as women and children, by penalizing gender-based violence and exploitation, thereby promoting equality and social justice. At the same time, the Code may include offences targeting activities that harm the environment, such as pollution or illegal exploitation of natural resources, indirectly contributing to sustainable resource use. Together, these elements demonstrate how the Criminal Code supports cross-cutting concerns like gender equity, environmental protection, and, indirectly, food security within its overarching role of maintaining social order and protecting fundamental rights.
