Abstract
This Long-Term Strategy for Low Carbon and Climate Resilience 2050 reflects the government’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with a rapid progress towards net-zero emission. The Long-Term Strategy contributes to the global goal of a low carbon economy, and to the national development objectives, taking into consideration the balance between emission reduction, economic growth, justice and climate resilience development. In compliance with the Constitutional provisions on the State obligations to guarantee decent life and healthy environment for all the citizens, through this Strategy Indonesia seeks opportunities for international partnerships to support environmental protection and the wise and sustainable use of natural resources, in order to achieve a transformation of the country’s whole economy. The achievement of the ambitious goal requires transformational changes in several sectors of the country’s economy, from energy, to food and land-use system, focusing on: energy security, food security, biodiversity conservation, afforestation, freshwater use, land rehabilitation.
This Strategy defines a long-term vision aimed at: aligning the climate goals and targets with national, sub-national and international objectives, including Sustainable Development Goals; enhancing opportunities for innovation; involving non-party stakeholders; enabling communities to earn benefits of early actions; strengthening human development and sustainable economic development. Concerning the mitigation and adaptation pathways, throughout the various sectors, the Strategy focuses on: protection of the ocean resources and strengthening of the integrated terrestrial and marine ecosystem management; conservation and sustainable forest management; accelerating afforestation and reforestation of degraded land; protection and restoration of peatland; improvement of agricultural productivity, through mitigation activities in rice fields; better utilisation of animal production; use of organic fertilisers; improvement of crop productivity; intensification in agriculture and adoption of new technologies for farming efficiency; application of integrated approach to farming and land use management; reducing food loss and waste; management of municipal solid waste; treatment of industrial waste; increasing domestic wastewater treatment facilities; cross-cutting measures, such as gender equality and women empowerment.
