National Plastic Waste Reduction Strategic Actions for Indonesia.

These Strategic Actions move from the consideration that Indonesia is the second-largest plastic polluter in the world, with 3.2 million tonnes of unmanaged plastic waste a year, of which about 1.29 million tonnes ends up in the sea. In addition, approximately 10 billion plastic carry bags, equal to 85,000 tonnes, are released each year into its local environment, rivers and oceans. That is why the country adopted specific Presidential Decrees to best address the issue. The document concerning National Plastic Waste Reduction Strategic Actions for Indonesia, formulated by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, the Government of Indonesia, and the IGES Centre Collaborating with UNEP on Environmental Technologies (CCET), in collaboration with Sustainable Waste Indonesia (SWI), aims at creating an enabling environment for the implementation of these Presidential Decrees within the timeframe 2020-2025 and provides holistic and practical actions to accelerate the reduction of plastic pollution from land-based sources. The report is structured as follows: 1) Introduction and background; 2) National Overview of Plastic Waste Management; 3) Strategic Action Plan for Plastic Waste Reduction in Indonesia; and 4) Monitoring, Evaluation and Review.
Introduction and background section concerns the Indonesian context on the topic. National Overview of Plastic Waste Management section provides for: a summary of national law, regulations and programmes on the topic, for solid waste management in the country, for national waste management stakeholders, including waste and recyclable collector companies and associations, for waste bank in the country and the challenges related to, for national plastic industry and priority issues on plastic pollution, including type of plastic industry and packaging, plastic import and export trade balance, potential plastic material recycling. Strategic Action Plan section concerns plastic litter in the marine ecosystem, plastic waste management and plastic consumption focusing on actions, principles and strategic goals in the short, medium and long-term: reducing plastic waste generation, with plastic waste reduction; reinforcing the plastic recycling system, with plastic waste reduction; reducing marine debris emitted into oceans; consolidating stakeholders’ responsibility.
