Abstract
The European Union (Official Controls in relation to Food Legislation) (Imports of Food of Non-Animal Origin) Regulations 2020 establish comprehensive guidelines for the importation of food of non-animal origin into the state. These regulations outline the responsibilities of the competent authorities, including the Food Safety Authority of Ireland and the Health Service Executive, in ensuring compliance with food legislation. They detail the procedures for official controls at border control posts, including the setting and collection of fees, and the requirements for prior notification and presentation of consignments for inspection. The regulations also specify the enforcement measures to be taken in cases of non-compliance, including the detention, refusal of entry, or destruction of consignments that pose a risk to human, animal, or plant health. Additionally, the regulations provide for the prosecution of offences and the imposition of penalties for violations.
