These Regulations, comprising 33 articles, are designed to promote pig welfare in agricultural settings by establishing standards for humane and safe conditions in piggeries, balancing agricultural needs with disease prevention. Key provisions include: (i) ensuring pigs are kept in environments free from potential injury or significant harm; (ii) maintaining essential environmental conditions, such as adequate ventilation, noise control, and lighting; (iii) setting maximum allowable gas levels - 10 ppm for ammonia, 3,000 ppm for carbon dioxide, and 2.5 ppm for hydrogen sulfide - and a noise limit of 85 decibels; (iv) specifying space requirements based on pigs' weight, detailing minimum area per pig and maximum density for bedded and non-bedded farms; (v) requiring at least one trained worker to supervise operations, with contact information for a supervisor visibly posted. Additionally, the Regulations mandate that skilled workers must obtain a permit from the Director to perform specific procedures, like tail-docking and castration. Non-compliance may result in penalties, including up to six months of imprisonment for inadequate conditions or overcrowding.
