Abstract
This National Sodium Reduction Program is a national initiative to reduce the average sodium intake in the Israeli population across all age groups and sectors. The program has been operating for one year and aims to achieve an average daily salt intake of 6 grams or less by the year 2020, which would represent a 3-gram reduction. The Program's main actions are to promote healthy eating habits, specifically by reducing salt intake through public education and collaboration with the food industry. Its success will be monitored by surveying the population's sodium levels and analyzing the salt content of various food products. To reach the public, the Program's strategies include (i) a public marketing campaign to raise awareness; (ii) collaboration with the food industry to reduce sodium in processed foods; (iii) improved front-of-package labeling to help consumers make healthier choices. The Program also provides general guidelines for the public to adopt healthier nutritional habits, including tips for meal preparation.
