Abstract
This Action Plan provides for a comprehensive plan for the introduction of cheetah from the African continent into India at the identified site of the Kuno National Park. It consists of six chapters: 1. Executive Summary; 2. Introduction & Background; 3. Project Goal and Objectives; 4. Suitability of the Introduction Area; 5. Action Plan; and 6. Conclusion.
Chapter 1 contains the executive summary. Chapter 2 provides an introduction and historical background of cheetah in India. It also discusses the niche model predictions for the ideal eco-climatic for cheetah in India. Chapter 3 states the goal, objectives and aims of cheetah translocation in Kuno national park. The goals include establishing breeding cheetah populations in safe habitats across its historical range; and enhancing India’s capacity to sequester carbon through ecosystem restoration activities in cheetah conservation areas and thereby contribute towards the global climate change mitigation goals. Chapter 4 describes the suitability of the introduction area and the relevant information of the site identified.
Chapter 5 states that the Action Plan has been developed in compliance with IUCN Guidelines for reintroduction and conservation translocations. It highlights the points that need to be considered for formulating objectives and actions to achieve the cheetah reintroduction goals in Kuno national park. This includes aspects such as habitat management, financial and administrative support, training and capacity building, disease and health management, post-release monitoring and research, genetic management, community participation and wildlife tourism. Chapter 6 contains the conclusion.
