Abstract
The Indian Penal Code, 1860 (Code) provides for the offences and penalties committed by persons within India for every act or omission contrary to the provisions of this Code. The Code provides for punishment and penalties for offences committed, inter alia, in respect of property, human body, public health and safety, weights and measures etc. The Code includes penalties for adulteration of food or drinks meant for sale (sec. 270); sale of noxious food or drinks (sec. 271); fouling water of public spring or reservoir (sec. 277); harming animals (sec. 428); harming cattle (sec. 429); mischief by injury to works of irrigation, or supply of water meant for food or drink for human beings or animals (sec. 430); or any bridge or navigable river (sec. 431); or drainage (sec. 432); or damage to agricultural produce (sec. 435).
