Abstract
These Rules prescribe functions necessary to carry out provisions of the Biological Diversity Act.
The Rules prescribe composition and membership of the Karnataka Biodiversity Board and the manner of selection, terms of office, conditions of service, etc. of the Board’s Chairperson.
The Rules provide for powers, functions and duties of the Karanatka State Biodiversity Board, including: advise the Government on matters relating to the conservation of biodiversity, sustainable use of its components and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the use of biological resources; identify areas of biodiversity importance and make appropriate regulations for their management and to enable the State Government to declare them as Biodiversity Heritage Sites; and evolve strategies, plans and programmes of action for conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity including measures for identification and monitoring of areas rich in biological resources, promotion of in situ and ex situ conservation of biological resources, etc.
The Rules further provide for: procedures and the application form for obtaining permission to access or collect biological resources; establishment of Biodiversity Management Committees, their composition and functions and duties; operation of the State Biodiversity Fund; etc.
