Abstract
This Act provides for the preservation of animals, as listed in the Schedule, and prohibits their slaughter unless having obtained a certificate from the competent authority that the animal is fit for slaughter.
The Act further provides for: restrictions on the slaughter of scheduled animals; specified places where slaughtering is allowed; powers of the competent authority to enter and inspect places; penalties; etc.

An Act to provide for the prohibition of slaughter and preservation of cows, bulls and bullocks useful for milch, breeding, draught or agricultural purposes and for restriction on slaughter for the preservation of certain other animals suitable for the said purposes.
Entry into force notes
This Act entered into force on 15 April 1978.
Notes
This Act repeals the Bombay Animal Preservation Act, 1948, the Bombay Animal Preservation Act, 1954, the Central Provinces and Berar Animal Preservation Act, 1949 and the Hyderbad (Slaughter of Animals) Act, 1950.
