Abstract
These Rules focus on the environmentally sound management of plastic waste, aiming to mitigate the adverse effects of plastic pollution on health and the environment. The document emphasizes the principle of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), which mandates manufacturers to manage the lifecycle of their products, including post, consumer waste. The implementation plan outlined in the rules includes the establishment of collection centers for plastic waste, which manufacturers are required to finance. Municipal authorities are tasked with creating awareness among stakeholders, including waste pickers and the general public, about their responsibilities in waste management. The rules also prohibit open burning of plastic waste and encourage collaboration with agencies involved in waste management. Compliance with environmental standards and the importance of monitoring and reporting by State Pollution Control Boards to ensure effective implementation is mandated.
