Abstract
The objectives of this Policy includes 100% water and sanitation coverage in all rural households in Punjab, to regulate the use of water and to ensure the availability, quality and sustainability of domestic water supplies. The Policy adopts a demand responsive and decentralized management approach for rural water supply and sanitation schemes. It also provides for strategies to ensure source sustainability and system sustainability by providing training to local bodies and conjunctive use of groundwater and surface water including measures such as roof top rain water harvesting, storm water harvesting, recycling and reuse of waste water. The Policy envisages formulating an appropriate Climate Change Adaptation Strategy for Water Supply and Sanitation. The Policy encourages community based water testing for water quality monitoring and providing assistance to manage solid waste and treatment of waste water. The Policy recommends education on WASH issues, public-private partnerships and efficient grievance redressal system. It also lays down the strategy on monitoring at various levels and financing needed to achieve the objects of the Policy.
