Abstract
This Act seeks to promote sustainable fish farming in freshwater. During the aquaculture operations and generally, care must be taken to minimize disruption of freshwater ecosystems and wild freshwater fish stocks and to ensure that their sustainable exploitation is not compromised. This Act applies to all fish farming that takes place in freshwater in Icelandic territory. The Minister shall be the principal authority for matters of covered by this Act, but the administration of the Administration is otherwise assigned to the Fisheries Agency, which shall supervise compliance with the provisions of the Act. Every five years the operator shall submit to the Fisheries Agency a fisheries program, which shall take into account risks to the ecosystem. The Act also provides rules for the use of fish stock and repopulation of fish stock.
