Abstract
The purpose of this Act is to lay down rules for the keeping of livestock, the marking and registration of livestock and the collection of statistics and other data on livestock. "Livestock" in this Act refers to poultry, goats, horses, rabbits, fur animals, cattle, sheep and pigs. If a dispute arises as to what should be covered by the term livestock, a decision shall be taken on this by the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority. The Minister is in charge of the management of matters under this Act. The Icelandic Food and Food Administration handles the acquisition of the statistics and the monitoring of livestock labeling. Livestock keeping shall be authorized by local authorities. The Act sets out duties of livestock farmers, monitoring and inspection powers of the Food and Veterinary Authority and regulation-making powers of the Minister.
