Abstract
The objective of the present Act is to stipulate the right to fish in freshwater and the rational, economical and sustainable use of fish stocks in freshwater and their protection. It applies to all fishing from freshwater fish stocks in Icelandic territory. The Act contains 57 articles divided into the following chapters: I. Objetives and scope; II. About fishing rights; III. About fisheries management; IV. About fishing equipment and fishing methods; V. About fishways and other structures in and around fishing lakes; VI. About fishing associations; VII. About assessments and damages; VIII. Penalty and due process provisions; IX. Validity etc.
The Act regulates fishing rights in general, fishing rights in public lakes, in public land, and in undivided ownership. Fishing rights may not be separated to any extent from real estate. All fishing lakes and fishing rights holders must be registered as indicated in this Act. The Act further prohibits salmon fishing in the sea. Salmon fishing is allowed in the period from May 20 to September 30 each year, but only for 105 days within that period. In lakes, it is only allowed to use lines, rods, poles, weights, cable nets and trawl nets.
