Abstract
The present document contains an analysis of the task force on actions to reduce the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in Iceland. The document identifies the following on-going measures aimed at reducing the spread of antibiotic resistance: 1. Surveillance of antibiotic use and antibiotic-resistant bacteria in humans; 2. Surveillance of antibiotic use and antibiotic-resistant bacteria in animals; 3. Surveillance of pathogenic bacteria and antibiotic resistance in food; and 4. Surveillance of the spread of drug resistance in parasites. It further recommends the following measures: (1) setting a public policy on issues related to resistance to antibiotics and antiparasitic drugs; (2) to annually publish a report on the use of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance; (3) adopting a policy on the prudent use of antibiotics in humans; (4) adopting a policy on the prudent use of antibiotics in animals; (5) strengthening surveillance of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in animals and in food production; (6) enhancing surveillance of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in food; (7) conducting a comprehensive review of the use of antiparasitic drugs in this country; (8) conducting research on the presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the environment; (9) increasing screenings for antibiotic-resistant bacteria in healthcare facilities among defined risk groups; and (10) making efforts to reduce the risk of the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria with travelers.
