Abstract
The Plan aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to increase carbon uptake from the atmosphere based on the country's commitment in the Paris Agreement. The Plan further emphasises on a rapid clean energy transition in transport and increasing efforts in the LULUCF sector, where Iceland has great mitigation potential in afforestation, revegetation and wetland reclamation. The Plan requires also for use of technology for new and cost-effective ways to reduce emissions arising from various sources. This Plan includes 48 actions divided into three parts as follow: Actions aiming to reduce emissions that fall under the EU Effort Sharing Regulation (ESR) (1); Actions to reduce emissions in connection with EU-ETS (2); and Actions to reduce emissions and increase carbon sequestration through improved land use, land use change and forestry (LULUCF).
