Abstract
This regulation prohibits the hunting of all seal species within Icelandic jurisdiction, including the sea, rivers and lakes, unless a special permit has been granted by the Directorate of Fisheries (Fiskistofa) for limited seal hunting for personal use. It also bans all sale and marketing of Icelandic seals and seal products. Permits may be granted annually for subsistence-type use in areas where such hunting has traditionally taken place, subject to conditions on catch reporting, hunting area, hunting method, number and size of seals, hunting period and other restrictions. Applications must include information on the intended hunting area, method, number of seals requested, the applicant’s hunting history over the previous five years, and proof of land rights or agreement with the landowner. Permits cannot be transferred, reporting is mandatory, and Fiskistofa may limit, monitor or revoke permits, including where the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute considers restrictions necessary or where permit conditions are not met.
