Regulation No. 172/2010 on the sea transport of raw sugar, liquid fats and oils.

This Regulation lays down rules for the sea transport of raw sugar, liquid fats and oils intended for human consumption after further treatment. It allows raw sugar to be transported in containers, freight containers or tanks not exclusively used for food only if they have been properly cleaned and the previous cargo was not a liquid; documentation on the previous cargo and cleaning must accompany the shipment and the sugar must be refined before human consumption. For liquid fats and oils, the regulation sets conditions for using non-food-dedicated tanks, depending on whether the product will undergo further treatment and on the tank material, with requirements concerning previous cargoes, tank cleaning, stainless steel or epoxy-lined tanks, and documentary evidence to be held by the ship’s master. It also requires operators to provide documentation to official inspectors on request, assigns enforcement to the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority and municipal health committees, and includes an annex listing permitted previous cargoes, with CAS numbers, for tanks used to transport liquid fats and oils.
