Abstract
This regulation governs fishing for Eastern Atlantic bluefin tuna by Icelandic vessels within the ICCAT Convention Area, including areas beyond national jurisdiction and areas where Icelandic vessels have fishing rights, and implements Iceland’s obligations as an ICCAT member. For 2026, it sets a total Icelandic catch limit of 253.14 tonnes, of which 250 tonnes are allocated to directed longline fishing and 3.14 tonnes to estimated bycatch. Directed fishing requires a permit from the Directorate of Fisheries, may be authorised for up to three Icelandic vessels, and is limited to longline fishing from 1 August to 31 December in a specified area north of 42°N. The regulation sets rules on applications, allocation and transfer of catch limits, bycatch registration, illegal catch, mandatory release of live undersized tuna and certain protected species such as sea turtles and specified sharks, digital catch reporting, vessel monitoring, prior notifications, daily catch reports, landing ports, onboard observers, prohibition of aerial search, and electronic ICCAT traceability documentation for landing, import, sale, export and re-export.
