Regulation No. 24/1998 on mesh gauges and the performance of mesh measurements.

This regulation sets out how Icelandic fisheries inspectors and Coast Guard officers must measure the mesh size of fishing gear used by Icelandic and foreign vessels in Icelandic waters, and in some cases by Icelandic vessels outside Icelandic waters. It specifies the required design of mesh gauges, how the gauge must be inserted into the net, which meshes should be selected for measurement, and how average mesh size is calculated. If an initial measurement suggests the mesh is below the legal minimum, additional rows must be measured, and if the captain objects, a re-measurement using a weight or force gauge is carried out; the final average then determines the official mesh size of the net.
