Regulation No. 253/2026 on the transport of sheep and goats across disease-control lines.

This Regulation establishes strict rules for transporting sheep and goats across designated disease-control boundaries (“varnarlínur”) in order to prevent the spread of serious infectious livestock diseases, particularly scrapie and other notifiable animal diseases. It requires permits from the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority (MAST) for most cross-boundary animal movements, imposes genetic and disease-status requirements on transported animals, and creates special regimes for breeding stock, low-risk “sales compartments,” and animals with valuable genetic traits. The regulation also sets conditions for notifications, record-keeping, vehicle disinfection, biosecurity responsibilities, and official inspections, while providing penalties for violations and replacing earlier rules on the movement of live lambs between regions.
