Regulation No. 350/2011 on quality assessment of eiderdown.

This regulation governs the quality assessment and certification of Icelandic eiderdown. It sets rules on the appointment, licensing and duties of official eiderdown inspectors, who must have experience with eiderdown collection and handling, complete training, and submit annual reports. All eiderdown intended for domestic distribution or export must be assessed and weighed by an officially appointed inspector after full cleaning or washing, and must pass quality assessment before certification. The assessment checks that the down is essentially free from lumps, dirt, debris, foreign matter, dust and feathers, and also considers its properties, loft/fill power and colour; inspectors use both visual/tactile examination and a dust test by shaking a 30–50 g sample over white paper. The regulation also allows certification of finished products filled exclusively with eiderdown, sets rules on inspection costs and sealing of packages, and divides inspectors’ working areas into Northwest Iceland, Northeast Iceland and South Iceland in the annex.
