Regulation No. 455/2006 on seed potatoes.

This regulation establishes Iceland’s rules on seed potatoes: it defines key categories of potato seed material, sets licensing requirements for growers who sell seed potatoes on the general market, and requires regular renewal of seed stock through approved domestic or comparable imported foundation seed. It prohibits the sale or transfer of seed potatoes where serious pests or diseases are known or suspected, including ring rot, brown rot, potato wart disease and potato cyst nematodes, and gives the Agricultural Authority powers to monitor, sample, register outbreaks, suspend licences and impose long waiting periods before infected land can again be used for seed production. It also regulates packaging, labelling, minimum size, quality standards, transport, storage, sale and distribution, including separation from ware potatoes and disinfection requirements. A separate chapter governs certified foundation seed production, including categories such as pre-basic, basic and certified seed, inspections in the field and storage, isolation distances, restrictions on imported potatoes, and quality thresholds for defects and disease symptoms.
